Magnetic Golf Hats vs. Ball Marker Clips
A ball marker clip works. It gives you somewhere to keep your marker, and you can move it from one hat to another. A magnetic golf hat puts the magnet inside the brim, so you can carry the marker without adding a clip.
That second option is what we built into the Iron Goat. Here’s how the two compare and what I’d look at before choosing either.
What changes when the magnet is built in?
With the Iron Goat, you place the included GOAT ball marker at the magnetic spot on the brim. Pull it off when you need to mark your ball, then put it back when you’re done. The magnet stays hidden inside the hat.
The marker is still a separate piece. You’re just giving it a place to go without attaching another holder to the brim.

When a clip makes sense
If you already have a hat you love, a clip can be a simple way to add marker storage. You can also move it between hats, as long as it fits each brim.
Check the clip and marker together before buying. Brim thickness, clip shape and marker materials vary. A clip that works well on one hat may sit differently on another.
What I’d compare before buying
- The hat itself. An integrated magnet makes sense when you also like the fit and look of the hat. Don’t settle for a poor fit just to get a feature.
- How you carry your marker. If you reach for your brim throughout a round, either option can be useful. If you’re happy keeping a marker in your pocket, this may not matter much.
- Moving between hats. A clip is removable. The magnet in a magnetic hat stays with that hat.
- What’s included. An original Iron Goat Hat comes with one GOAT ball marker. For a clip or another hat, check the listing.
Can you use your own ball marker?
Possibly, but metal alone doesn’t mean it will work. The marker needs to be attracted to the magnet, and its size and shape affect how it sits. We haven’t tested every third-party marker, so the included GOAT marker is the easiest starting point.
We also sell extra GOAT ball markers if you want a spare.
A little about our design
The Iron Goat’s magnetic brim design was granted U.S. Design Patent D1,149,299 S on September 29, 2026. You can see the issued patent here. It covers the ornamental design shown in the patent.
The original Iron Goat Hat also has a double sweatband, interior lining, water-repellent fabric and an adjustable silicone snapback. It comes in Small and Standard fits. Standard is our most popular fit; Small runs very small, with a smaller crown and bill. Check the size guide before choosing.
If you’re buying a new hat and like having your marker on the brim, an integrated magnet is worth a look. If your current hat already does everything you want, a compatible clip may be all you need.
